For her latest collaboration, Anna Sui is hitting the beach. The designer has teamed up with surf-wear brand O'Neill for a collection of shore-ready pieces that just dropped at oneillclothing.com. With prices ranging from $44 to $100, the collab offers colorful swimsuits, dresses, and shorts perfect for warmer days ahead---and some of the patterns may look familiar. "We used prints from my past collections, and then adapted the looks to be more beach-friendly," Sui told InStyle at the collaboration's New York City launch party this week.
Inspired by classic California beach girls when designing the line, "It was important to keep the pieces feminine," said Sui, who has also incorporated swimwear into her recent spring collections. "I used a lot of lace and crochet, and I channeled some of my idols, like Michelle Phillips, Joni Mitchell, and the ladies of Laurel Canyon."
From lightweight dresses to embroidered shorts, "There's a certain ease and casualness to the collection," said Sui. Even the bright bikinis feature macramé-like woven details for an extra laid-back look. "The lacing up the sides and the fringe capture a '70s vibe," she said.
And the designs aren't only for days spent seaside. If you're not heading to the beach just yet, "Wear the cover-up with a black t-shirt and black pants," said Sui. "It'll still look really cool."
